Frequently Asked Questions
Is my writing private?
Your active chats are stored inside Unsent on your iPhone, and Unsent does not send your writing to us. There is no Unsent account, advertising, tracking, or automatic content sync. Apple device backups (including iCloud and computer backups), safety copies, and files you choose to export are managed separately by you.
Are messages ever sent by Unsent or shared with you?
No. A message in Unsent is never delivered to the person named in the chat or shared with us. Your writing can leave the device through actions you choose, such as copying it elsewhere, allowing Universal Clipboard, exporting a backup, or backing up your iPhone through iCloud or a computer. Apple device backups may include Unsent depending on your Apple settings.
Does Unsent automatically sync or upload my writing?
No. Unsent does not provide automatic cloud sync and does not upload your writing to us. Apple may include app data in an iCloud or computer backup of your iPhone according to your Apple settings. You can also choose to export a .unsent backup through Files.
How do backup and restore work?
Export creates a dated .unsent backup containing your chat data. Restore replaces all current chat data with the selected backup; it does not merge data. Before replacing non-empty chat data, Unsent creates and verifies a safety copy.
What is a safety copy?
A safety copy is a verified internal copy made before certain high-risk changes. It is required before replacing non-empty chat data during restore and before migration. Danger Zone Safety Copies is off by default; when it is on, Unsent also creates one before a Danger Zone deletion. Backup and Recovery shows whether any copies exist and lets you manage up to five.
Can I recover something I deleted?
Deletion is permanent in your current app data, with no trash or undo. Recovery is possible only if an earlier safety copy, exported backup, or Apple-controlled device backup exists and contains the deleted data. Restoring replaces all current chat data; Unsent cannot restore one message or chat by itself.
What happens if I delete Unsent?
Deleting the app removes its data from that installation. It does not delete .unsent files you exported. Apple may also retain app data in an iCloud or computer backup according to your Apple settings. Unsent does not receive or keep a backup of your chats and cannot recover them for you.
Are .unsent backups encrypted?
No. Unsent does not encrypt or password-protect .unsent backups. Their text records are plaintext, photos remain extractable, and someone with file access may be able to read the contents. The custom extension is not a security feature, so store and share backups carefully.
Where can I save and restore backups?
On My iPhone and iCloud Drive are supported. Other storage providers may not preserve the .unsent package correctly and are not currently supported for restore.
How do Face ID, Touch ID, and passcode protection work?
When protection is enabled in Settings under Privacy & Security, Unsent asks iOS to verify the device owner using Face ID, Touch ID, or the device passcode. Unsent receives only the result and never receives or stores biometric data.
Which devices are supported?
Unsent runs on iPhone with iOS 18.6 or later.
How can I contact support?
Open Settings → Support & Legal → Email Support, or email support@theunsentmessage.app. Unsent never attaches app data automatically. For your privacy, do not include messages, drafts, names, photos, or backup files in support emails.
